Base UWS

The Selma and Lawrence Ruben Base UWS aims to create joyful, pluralistic, and diverse community for Jews in their 20s and 30s in New York City, all while inspiring folks to connect with Judaism in ways meaningful for them. Base UWS prioritizes cultivating a relationship with Torah, practice of compassion, learning, and growth, and the ability for each person to show up as their authentic selves.

Rabbi Danny Stein

danny.stein@moishehouse.org

Professional Magician. Superhero-Wannabe. Radical Optimist.

Danny is thrilled to be the rabbi of The Selma and Lawrence Ruben Base UWS. He is deeply passionate about helping others connect with Judaism in authentically meaningful ways. Danny and his wife Tamara are committed to building a pluralistic Jewish community through Torah, justice and compassion, soulful prayer, and stimulating conversations. You will most likely find Danny studying a hasidic text, rallying for justice, (re)watching “The West Wing,” or eating sushi. He is interested in how we explore personal, political, and religious differences amongst ourselves, and he spent his final year of rabbinical school studying Hassidic tales focused on how these differences can be used to strengthen interpersonal relationships and holy community.

Danny received his rabbinic ordination from Hebrew College in Boston, where he completed a specialization in Spirituality and Social Justice and a unit of Clinical Pastoral Education at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. He spent his time serving communities at the Hillels of University of Massachusetts Amherst, Northeastern University, and Boston University, as well as Temple Beth Zion. Danny completed fellowships with the Shalom Hartman Institute, Mayyim Hayyim, and T’ruah: The Rabbinic Call of Human Rights. Prior to rabbinical school, he studied Talmud in Chicago with Svara: A Traditionally Radical Yeshiva.

Danny grew up as an active participant in the Chicagoland Reform Movement, including many summers spent at Camp OSRUI in Wisconsin. He received his undergraduate degree from American University in Washington, D.C. and studied for a semester at Hebrew University in Jerusalem. Aside from all things Jewish, Danny is a professional magician, performing magic for corporate and private events nationwide. He and Tamara are thrilled to call the Upper West Side home and cannot wait to welcome you!

Tamara Stein

tamara.stein@moishehouse.org

Avid Question-Asker. Reproductive Justice Enthusiast. Dedicated Swiftie.

Tamara is thrilled to be, along with her husband Danny, building a vibrant, diverse, and explorative Jewish community on the Upper West Side. While originally from Sacramento, CA, Tamara has been living on the East Coast and in the Midwest for well over a decade, and is looking forward to adding New York City to her list of places she has been fortunate enough to call home.

Tamara is a lawyer who received her J.D. from Suffolk University in Boston, MA. Tamara works as the Chief of Staff at Mayday Health, a non-profit that educates folks on medication abortion and how to access it in all 50 U.S. states. She is passionate about using her love of policy, law, operations, and strategic thinking to contribute to health equity and access, and feels privileged to have been given the opportunity to merge her passions with a career.

Growing up active in the Reform movement, it was through camp and youth group that Tamara found her true love of Jewish community, exploration of Jewish questions, and Tikkun Olam. While living in Chicago, Tamara worked in the Jewish community doing teen engagement work. In this role, she had the exciting opportunity to participate in the M² Educators Cohort and explore methodology and programming around experiential education in Jewish settings.

Tamara loves eating (and making!) sushi, traveling to visit friends and family, trying new Peloton workouts, and taking long walks on Shabbat with no destination in mind.
